Improve Your Singing Tone... Without Singing!

Improve Your Singing Tone… Without Singing!

improved tone with no singing!!

So I haven’t seen this student in over 3 weeks due to holidays.

We’ve been working on his jaw tension, tongue tension, throat tension, just general tension everywhere and although all the exercises work (He is far less tense then he was before he started the exercises there was still a long way to go).

So I saw him for the first time today in a long time and was instantly impressed with the way that he stood although posture is something that we’ve worked on many times before it was noticeable that he had done some work on his posture as it was far better.

He then spoke and his voice was clear as a bell…

I’ve mentioned before the importance of posture but I think it’s worth reiterating it again…

But what was it that he did that improved his posture so much and improved his singing and speaking tone beautifully?

Had he done any work on his singing in the last 3 weeks?

No…

Had he done work on his posture for singing?

No…

What had he been doing then?

He had a deep muscle massage in the last 3 weeks he’d had two of them.

When he came in he was visibly more relaxed his voice was projected and his tone was richer and far nicer. And he’d achieved all of this with no work on his singing!

So don’t underestimate the power of a good massage…

Not only was his posture better it was less tense which had profoundly affected his mindset meaning that all the exercises we did in that lesson worked easily as he was not so stressed.

So there you have it a great thing to do to help you work on releasing tension in your body.

I like to think of the throat as a tension sponge for your whole body if there’s tension in your mind we’ll hear it in your voice (your throat)…

If there’s tension in your body again we’ll hear it in the throat.

Only when your mind and body are both relaxed do you stand a chance of getting a throat that’s relaxed which in turn will give you a tone that’s relaxed, open and full sounding.

That’s the lesson to be learnt here…

You can do all the vocal exercises in the world you can work on jaw release exercises as much as you want or tongue release exercises or calming your mind exercises…

But you need to look at the whole body as one thing. As tensions don’t often start where you have them so the jaw tension, for example, could start with a bad posture that puts your spine out, this then affects the position of your jaw locking it up.

So if you’ve been working on your tensions might be a good idea to find a local massage parlour and book yourself in for a deep muscle massage and see how it affects your voice.

This is vocal coach Dylan…
